Alexandre Pantoja Submits Kai Asakura, Retains Flyweight Title at UFC 310

Alexandre Pantoja proved why he’s the king of the flyweight division, successfully defending his championship by submitting Kai Asakura in the second round of the UFC 310 main event at T-Mobile Arena.

In front of a packed house of 18,648 fans, Pantoja neutralized Asakura’s explosive striking arsenal with world-class grappling, forcing the promotional newcomer to succumb to a rear-naked choke at 2:05 of Round 2. The victory marked Pantoja’s third successful title defense and extended his winning streak to seven.

“This is the level, UFC level, that’s here — so high. You think some Japanese [fighter] is gonna come here and take my belt? No,” Pantoja declared emphatically after his victory.

A Battle of Styles

Asakura, a former RIZIN bantamweight champion and a rising star from Japan, entered the fight with high expectations after signing with the UFC in June. He sought to become the first Japanese UFC champion but found himself outmatched against Pantoja’s elite skills.

The Brazilian champion controlled the pace early, stifling Asakura’s striking game in the first round. In the second, Pantoja ramped up the pressure, forcing a scramble against the fence and seamlessly taking Asakura’s back. Moments later, the rear-naked choke was locked in, and Asakura was put to sleep, solidifying Pantoja’s dominance.

Chasing Greatness

With the victory, Pantoja (29-5) climbed to second all-time in flyweight title fight wins, trailing only the legendary Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, who retired earlier this year with 12 title defenses.

But Pantoja isn’t content with being second best. After his win, he issued a bold challenge to Johnson, calling for the former champion to come out of retirement for a showdown.

“He doesn’t fight anymore, he retired this year,” Pantoja acknowledged. “But this is something for you, Demetrious Johnson. I’m the GOAT here. If you want to prove you’re the GOAT, come back.”

While a fight with Johnson may remain a dream, Pantoja has plenty of challenges awaiting him in the flyweight division. Top contenders like Kai Kara-France, Amir Albazi, and Brandon Royval are all potential opponents for his next title defense.
