Satellite images show damaged fighter planes after Crimea explosions

Ukraine updates

New satellite imagery appears to show that at least seven warplanes have exploded over Russian bases in Crimea, although Russia claims no planes were damaged by explosions this week.

The images, released Wednesday by US-based earth imaging company Planet Labs PBC, also show charred grass and several craters near the tarmac.

But Ukrainian presidential aide Oleksi Arestovich said the explosion was caused by a Ukrainian-made long-range weapon or by Ukrainian partisans operating in Crimea. Ukraine has stopped publicly

Nine Russian fighter jets were destroyed in multiple massive explosions on Tuesday that killed one and wounded 14, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Wednesday.

Russia has tried to downplay the explosion, saying several munitions on the base caught fire and exploded.
